Scarborough-Agincourt Constituents speak on Afghanistan -Karygiannis

OTTAWA - The Honourable Jim Karygiannis, Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt, released the results of his consultations with his constituents on Canada’s role in Afghanistan.

“The decisions we are making with respect to Canada’s mission in Afghanistan are extremely important.” said Mr. Karygiannis. “I believe that all Canadians must be involved in this discussion and that their views must be heard. That is why I have asked my constituents to tell me their thoughts on this important issue.”

In early February, Mr. Karygiannis sent flyers to every home in Scarborough-Agincourt requesting constituents to answer the following three questions:

-  Should the Canadian mission in Afghanistan be extended beyond 2009?

-  Should Canada provide additional assistance to Afghanistan?

-  Should Canada remove its troops from Afghanistan immediately?

“I have been receiving answers by phone, email and mail. Seventy-four percent believe we should not extent the Canadian combat mission beyond 2009. However, seventy-one percent believe that we should offer additional assistance - infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads, etc.).” Mr. Karygiannis commented. “On the issue of leaving Afghanistan immediately, my constituents are more evenly divided fifty-nine percent feel we should withdraw our troops now, while forty-one percent feel Canada should stay to help the people of Afghanistan.”
